Meet Metro Monday continues with Brian Vanderberg, who recently transferred to a new program!
Position/Program?
I just transferred to the University of Michigan team as an EC-155 pilot.
How long have you been with Metro?
I’ve been with Metro since September 2016, when Metro got the contract for West Michigan Air Care and replaced the Part 135 program’s AS365N2s with the EC145e. When WMAC was closed by sponsoring hospitals, I was impressed with the effort that Metro Aviation made to retain the group of pilots that were suddenly out of a job. I opted to be a float pilot while waiting for position to open at UM. It was a great opportunity to experience flying in different sections of the country and interface with different programs and crews.
How did you become a pilot?
I became a pilot through Western Michigan University, where I earned my Bachelors Degree, fixed wing Commercial Pilot/Instrument and myMulti-Engine ratings.
What did you do prior to entering the air
medical industry?
Prior to the air medical industry, I got into the rotary wing game when I entered the US Army Warrant Officer Flight Training program after graduation from WMU. I did a utilization tour with the 10th Mountain Division at Ft. Drum, NY in the OH-58D before finishing out my Army time as Instructor Pilot in OH-58A/C at Ft. Rucker, AL.
What is your favorite thing about working for Metro?
I have enjoyed the option to visit and work at other bases within the Metro system. An opportunity I would not have had, had West Michigan Air Care remained a stand-alone Part 135 operator. While at WMAC, I would cover a few shifts here and there at other Metro bases and being a float pilot expanded upon that. While a great experience that I enjoyed, it gave perspective that I wanted to have a permanent assignment. Metro made sure I was taken care of!
